TV Comps FAQ

Do people really win broadcast competitions?

Yes! ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 all publish the names of winners of broadcast competitions on their websites.

How can such extravagant prize packages be given away?

Entries via premium rate phone numbers alone have the potential to generate a lot of money, especially when there is a ready made audience to advertise to.

Also the prize packages are often sponsored. In exchange for donating towards the package, companies will receive some brief TV advertising and the personal details of all entrants for further marketing (look out for any 'opt-in' check boxes or wording in the terms and conditions).

Why include the option for free entries?

Competitions fall under the Gambling Commission's jurisdiction. The gambling act 2005 states that any prize draw requiring a payment to participate will be classed as a lottery. The free entry route is offered (via a website or post) to avoid this classification as the act also states that lotteries cannot be run for private or commercial gain (National Lottery excluded).

Postal entries? Online is more convenient!

The convenience of online entries appears to be having an impact on the other entry methods. Unfortunately, the Gambling Act 2005 specifically states that 'a letter sent by ordinary post' is an acceptable free entry route. All entry routes must have the same chances of winning, so all we suggest is keep sending in the postal entries. If the costs to process them rise, other routes may be reconsidered in the future.

Who is eligible to win?

Terms and conditions differ for each competition but the general requirements are that the entrant must be 18 years or older and a UK resident.
